“Xihe” Completed Excavation of Tung Chung West Tunnels
The Tung Chung Line Extension Project has achieved another important milestone. “Xihe”, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) responsible for constructing the Tung Chung West railway tunnels, has successfully completed excavation of the two tunnels in both directions, marking another major step towards the target opening of the extension in 2029.

The Tung Chung West tunnels form a vital part of the extension and will connect the existing Tung Chung Station with the future Tung Chung West Station. Measuring 7.3 metres in diameter and weighing approximately 1,000 tonnes, “Xihe” commenced tunnelling in early 2025 and subsequently completed excavation towards Tung Chung West Station before returning to Tung Chung Station.
Despite site constraints, the project team successfully carried out MTR’s first on-site TBM U-turn operation. This innovative approach reduced the need for major lifting operations and road transportation, helping minimise impacts on the community.

”The successful tunnel breakthrough demonstrated the professionalism and strong collaboration of the project team, and thanked the community for its continued understanding and support throughout the construction period,” said Ms Jeny Yeung, Chief Executive Officer of MTR Corporation.
With the completion of the tunnel civil works, the Tung Chung West Section will move into the track laying and electrical and mechanical installation stage. MTR will continue to engage closely with the community while advancing the project, with the aim of providing more convenient railway services and further enhancing the transport network of North Lantau.
