Tung Chung Line Extension Major Track Diversion Works
Facilitating the Tung Chung Line Extension’s Major Track Diversion Works
Train Service Between Tung Chung & Sunny Bay Stations will End Early on the evening of 26 October
The major track diversion works under the Tung Chung Line Extension project are entering a key stage. The works will connect both the existing Tung Chung- and Hong Kong-bound tracks of the Tung Chung Line to the future new railway sections, which will divert the Tung Chung Line northwards to connect with the future Tung Chung East Station. A total of four turnouts will be installed under these works, with the first turnout scheduled for installation in the late evening of 26 October this year.
26 October late night: Train Service Adjustment on the Tung Chung Line:
To facilitate the turnout installation works, train service between Tung Chung and Sunny Bay stations will end about two hours earlier than usual on the evening of 26 October. The schedule for the last train is as follows:
Subsequently, normal service between Hong Kong and Sunny Bay stations will be maintained until the usual end-of-service time. The Airport Express service will not be affected.
Specific Transport Arrangements:
1. Free shuttle buses will operate between Tung Chung and Sunny Bay stations during the service adjustment.
Direction | Boarding/Drop-off Location | Frequency |
Tung Chung Station to Sunny Bay Station | Tung Chung Station Exit A Vehicle Lay-by |
Around 3-9 Minutes |
Sunny Bay Station to Tung Chung Station | Sunny Bay Station Exit A Sunny Bay Public Transport Interchange |
2. Embark on your journey earlier and allow more time for commuting
a. Since the shuttle bus journey takes about 20-30 minutes, which is longer than the train ride, we recommend passengers allocate extra time for their travel
b. Passengers intending to catch the last train of any railway line should pay special attention! (To catch the connecting train to Hong Kong station at Sunny Bay station, you must board the shuttle bus departing from Tung Chung before 00:18.
3. Use MTR Mobile app to plan your journey
a. Passengers can use MTR Mobile to plan their journeys and get the latest Tung Chung Line service information!
Prominent posters and signages will be displayed along the Tung Chung Line and at other major MTR stations, and information about service adjustments will be disseminated through station and in-train announcements, news media, and MTR social media. Please pay close attention! There will be notices at the stations that night to inform passengers about the arrangements, and additional staff will be deployed to assist passengers with the shuttle bus service.
Under the Tung Chung Line Extension project, a new Tung Chung East Station# will be constructed between the existing Sunny Bay and Tung Chung stations. To connect to the future new station, the Tung Chung Line mainline tracks need to be diverted to the north with the construction of an approximately 1.2-kilometre new railway section.
The major track diversion works mainly include:
• Construction of a new railway section
• Installation of overhead lines
• Modification of the existing signaling system
• Phased installation of four turnouts on both the Tung Chung- and Hong Kong-bound tracks
The turnout installation is particularly critical in the track diversion works. Turnouts are important track facilities that allow trains to enter the new railway section. This works needs to be carried out on the operating Tung Chung Line tracks, and includes the following procedures that must be carried out uninterrupted:
• Installation of track components
• Track position adjustment and connection
• Installation of a point machine
• Testing of the signaling system and the various tests before train service resumption
After multiple reviews and careful planning by the project team, it was confirmed that several consecutive hours are necessary for the works to be carried out safely and smoothly. As the “Golden Two Hours” window is insufficient, it is inevitable that non-traffic hours will need to be slightly extended, with a minor service adjustment to be made on the Tung Chung Line service. The first such adjustment is scheduled for 26 October 2024.
