Latest Project Progress
Tung Chung West Section
The Tung Chung West section of the Tung Chung Line Extension project mainly consists of an approximately 1.3km westward extension of the existing railway tunnel from Tung Chung Station, a new Tung Chung West Station# adjacent Yat Tung Estate, and an emergency egress point at Shun Tung Road.
Worksite formation for the tunnelling works
To facilitate the tunnel construction, the projects team has set up a construction site at the end of the existing Tung Chung Line tunnel, i.e., the public open space between the two phases of Tung Chung Crescent for the works including setting up a launching shaft for the Tunnel Boring Machine. Part of the open space has been temporarily occupied for the works site and site formation is now in progress. A section of the footpath has been diverted in phases to facilitate the construction of a temporary covered walkway between Tung Chung Crescent and Shun Tung Road for nearby residents. The covered walkway is expected to be completed in the third quarter of this year.
Demolition of the Yu Tung Road Footbridge Ramp and New Temporary Pedestrian Crossing
To facilitate the construction of Tung Chung West# Station, the ramp at the Yat Tung Estate end of the Yu Tung Road footbridge will be dismantled. The relevant works have commenced since mid-July 2023. To make crossing Yu Tung Road easier for local residents, a new temporary pedestrian crossing was opened in August between Yat Tung and Mun Tung estates. Pedestrians and cyclists can cross Yu Tung Road using the existing staircase and elevator of the footbridge, or via the new temporary pedestrian crossing.
Tung Chung East Section
The Tung Chung East section of the Tung Chung Line Extension project mainly consists of the construction of Tung Chung East Station in the Tung Chung East new reclamation area, and a new section of tracks of approximately 1.2 km, including track diversion works to connect the new station to the existing Tung Chung Line tracks. Some of the track works must be carried out on the operating Tung Chung Line. To maintain existing railway services and accommodate the Tung Chung Line’s regular maintenance needs, these works can be carried out only during the very limited non-traffic hours at night.
Currently, site formation works are ongoing at the Tung Chung East Station site, and track slewing works are continuing during non-traffic hours to prepare for the construction of the new track section and its diversion to the Tung Chung Line.
Good site management to minimise impacts on residents
During the construction of the Tung Chung Line Extension, the project team will maintain proper site management and implement a series of mitigation measures to minimise the construction noise and dust as far as practicable. A noise enclosure will be installed at the construction site before the excavation of the shaft for the tunnel boring machine. The team will also conduct environmental monitoring and regularly review the dust and noise impact of the construction.
Works monitoring to ensure safety
To ensure the works are carried out safely and prudently, the Corporation has appointed a consultant to carry out condition surveys in phases for the structures near the railway alignment and work sites of the project to record their condition prior to the commencement of the project’s construction. In addition, the project team also carries out monitoring before and during the construction to keep in view the condition of the ground and structures along the project’s alignment and work sites.
