Works commenced for the Tung Chung Line Extension in May this year. As part of the community, apart from constructing a railway, the Corporation also reached out and injected new vibes to the community.

To enhance the understanding of Tung Chung residents about their own community and the railway development, a Tung Chung Community Guided Tour Programme is launched, which is co-organized by Tung Chung Safe and Healthy City and Outlying Islands Women’s Association Limited and fully supported by the Corporation. Encompassing the four key themes of history, culture, nature and railway, the programme facilitates and trains up the local residents as tour guides in an interactive way, to tell the participants about the stories of Tung Chung, including its history, transportation development, as well as the community features & development.

Themed guided tour

History & culture

The Ma Wan Chung village was a core district of Tung Chung in the past. Nowadays, the nearby areas of Ma Wan Chung village are well developed surrounding with tall buildings, but the features of “original Tung Chung” were wel retained in Ma Wan Chung village. People can experience a different Tung Chung here including the historical traces, the natural environment, the peaceful fishing village, as well as the human touch of the local villagers.

Transportation development

Before the Tung Chung new town development, the Ma Wan Chung pier and its surrounding was once a transportation hub of Tung Chung, with ferries to many places including the Castle Peak (Tuen Mun) and Tai O etc. The pier was also the terminus of the bus routes in Lantau. Located near the pier is a monument about the opening of the Tung Chung Road in 1960s, proofing that Tung Chung Road was a key main road of Tung Chung at that time. All of these
witnessed the transportation development from water/road-oriented transport to railway-oriented transport in Tung Chung.

Natural environment

At “Chung Hau” of Tung Chung Bay, where the different streams of Tung Chung River merge, people can see the natural mangroves. While enjoying the peaceful time brought by the nature, people may take the opportunity to observe the beautiful lives on the mudflats like the fiddler crab and the mudskipper. These are all unique and special scenes that you can only enjoy in Tung Chung.

Urban rural integration

During the Tung Chung new town development, the local features and rural character were retained, which let Tung Chung becoming a city integrating the urban features with rural features. It also becomes one of the significant features of Tung Chung. Together with the Tung Chung new town extension, we will try to retain the local features and characters when constructing the Tung Chung Line Extension, and also to include the sustainable and green elements at the same time, to grow together with the community.

The Kickoff – Tung Chung Line Extension Community Guided Tour Programme
The Tung Chung Line Extension Community Guided Tour Programme was officially launched on October 14, 2023, with a group of community representatives and leaders participating in the kick-off event and embarking on the inaugural guided tour along the designated route on a sunny day. The public guided tour will be held from the Q4 2023 to Q1 2024, primarily targeting the residents of Tung Chung.

The guided tour begins with a visit to Ma Wan Chung, the former town center of Tung Chung, where participants can explore historic shops that have been around for over 50 years. Through conversations with local residents, they can learn about the stories and witness the transformation of Tung Chung from a small fishing village to a modern new town. The tour also focuses on the development of transportation, showcasing the shift from water/road-oriented transport to railway-oriented transport in Tung Chung nowadays.
