Students Experience Railway Construction via Tunnel Boring Machine STEAM Workshops

Since mid-last year, the Tung Chung Line Extension team has held over 13 talks and Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) STEAM workshops, with more than 800 students and seniors participating. Through the TBM model and seeing the TBM components in person, participants learned how the Tung Chung west section tunnel is to be constructed and gained a deeper understanding of the project.

Check out the workshop’s highlights!

Continuing Care - Visiting Residents to Show Care

The project team continued to support the “Yat Tung Summer Sunshine Caring Activities” and visited two households in Yat Tung Estate on 24 October last year with Hon Kwok Wai-keung, Legislative Council Member, Mr Lau Chin-pang, Islands District Council Member and Ms Amy Yeung, District Officer (Islands), distributing gift bags to residents to show care.

Celebrating the Year of the Snake with the Community

To celebrate the Year of the Snake with the community, the project team held celebratory activities at the Salvation Army Lam Butt Chung Memorial School and Po Leung Kuk Cheung Poon Mei Yee Kindergarten on 6 and 24 January, respectively, with over 100 students creating their own versions of Fai Chun using vibrant gold pigment. The festive event also featured a tunnel boring machine workshop, where students learned more about the project through the tunnel boring machine model and puzzles.

Additionally, the project team brought New Year blessings to the residents of Tung Chung with community partners, including:

• Fully supporting the Tung Chung Living Network’s New Year celebration event on 22 January, delivering fortune gift bags to the residents of Yat Tung Estate and Mun Tung Estate, deepening the connection with the community;
• Collaborating with the Tung Chung Rural Committee to prepare and distribute gift bags on 5 February, delivering heartfelt blessings and New Year gifts to the villagers of Ma Wan Chung Village, adding warmth to the New Year for the residents, and thanking them for their continuous support and understanding of the project;
• Participating in the Tung Chung Rural Committee’s “Caring for the Elderly ‘Poon Choi’ Feast” on February 8 to gather with seniors and villagers of the community and celebrate the new year together.
