Tung Chung Line Extension – New Railways Go Beyond Boundaries

The Tung Chung Line Extension (TUE) Ground-breaking Ceremony was held on 25 May 2023, marking the start of a new chapter in Hong Kong’s railway development. It also signified that the main construction works of the TUE project have commenced. The ceremony was officiated by Mr Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Dr Rex Auyeung, Chairman of MTR Corporation, with over 150 guests in attendance to witness this important milestone. Everyone participated in the groundbreaking, toasting, and lion dance ceremony, wishing for the smooth completion of the project for the benefit of the Tung Chung community.

The Tung Chung Line Extension project mainly comprises two sections: the “Tung Chung East (TCE) Section” and the “Tung Chung West (TCW) Section”. The TCE section includes constructing an approximately 1.2km new railway section and diverting the tracks between Sunny Bay Station and Tung Chung Station, with the new Tung Chung East Station# to be built serving the future population in the Tung Chung East reclamation area. The TCW section will extend westward from the existing Tung Chung Line with the construction of Tung Chung West Station# located to the west of the Yat Tung Estate, and it will become the new terminal station of the Tung Chung Line.
#Station names are working titles only

Benefits

The Tung Chung Line Extension will serve a total of some 290,000 current and future residents of the Tung Chung district, linking up the railway and public transportation network of North Lantau, enhancing connectivity within and outside the district, and supporting the sustainable growth of the living and working population in the long run. Upon the project’s commissioning, the travelling time from Tung Chung East to Tsim Sha Tsui or Central will be shortened by around 21 minutes.
