Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival with the Tung Chung Community

The Tung Chung Line Extension (TUE) project is a “community railway” for the future, which will bring new impetus for the sustainable development of Tung Chung. The project team is closely connected with the community, taking care of the residents and building good relationships with the local neighbourhood.

Mid-Autumn Festival is about reunions and joy, as well as celebrating the year’s bountiful harvest. Mr Neil Smith, General Manager – Lantau (Projects) and Ms Lesly Leung, Project Manager – TUE of MTR Corporation led the team’s participation to fully support a series of community activities this year, sending festive blessings to residents and celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival together.

Mr Smith highlighted that “the railway has been enabling and witnessing the growth and transformation of the Tung Chung community, and together we are reaching yet another milestone! The works of TUE are expected to commence next year. It will become a railway that will connect the east and west of Tung Chung, complementing the future expansion of the Tung Chung New Town and bringing more opportunities to the community. In addition to catering for the residents’ transport needs, the design of the project will also promote convenience and quality of life! ”

Mr Neil Smith, General Manager – Lantau (Projects) and Ms Lesly Leung, Project Manager – TUE of MTR Corporation led the team to support and participate in an activity celebrating Hau Wong’s birthday.

The TUE team visited the Tung Chung community on 3 &10 September. The first event was to gather with residents at the Tung Chung Line Extension Information Centre in Ma Wan Chung to support the Mid-Autumn Festival events organised by the Chu Kuang Cultural Services Foundation. Together with the volunteers, the TUE project team distributed Tung Chung Line Extension blessing cards and ‘lucky’ bags to the residents, sending warmth and care on the Mid-Autumn Festival. The team also took the opportunity to introduce the project and latest updates to enhance participants’ understanding of the project and the benefits that it will bring.

The TUE team visited Yat Tung Estate on the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival to support another festive event, organised by the Harmonious Community Wellness Association, and distributed Mid-Autumn Festival “lucky” bags to the residents. Apart from moon cakes and pomelos, there were also Jade Bunny lanterns, T-Chai anti-epidemic masks and the specially designed Mid-Autumn Festival blessing cards of the Tung Chung Line Extension, adding a blissful atmosphere to the event as well as enabling residents to learn more about the railway project.

Participating in and supporting activities for Hau Wong’s Birthday in Tung Chung

Two new railway stations will be built in the east and west of Tung Chung in the future, bringing new development opportunities to the community. Meanwhile, the Tung Chung Heung has a long history and still inherits and retains profound cultural traditions, including the Hau Wong Birthday celebration on the 18thday of the eighth month in the Lunar calendar. This is one of the most important annual celebrations for residents of Tung Chung Heung. This year, the TUE team sponsored and was invited to participate in this very iconic traditional event. Mr Neil Smith and Ms Lesly Leung led the team to support the celebration and the Cantonese Opera performance, during which the team mingled with the villagers.

Mr Neil Smith, General Manager – Lantau (Projects), took the stage on behalf of the Corporation to accept a commemorative flag presented by the organiser.
