Tunnel Construction Works Started
The Tunnel Boring Machine is Named “Xihe”

The tunnel boring machine’s 16 components have been transported in batches from the Tung Chung East barging point to the Shun Tung Road tunnel shaft site for assembly since November last year. Transportation of the last two batches is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2025.

On January 24, the MTR Corporation and the contractor held a launching ceremony for the tunnel boring machine at the tunnel shaft site, marking a milestone in the tunnel construction. The ceremony was officiated by Mr Carl Devlin, Capital Works Director of MTR Corporation (center), Hon Chan Hok-fung, Legislative Council Member (4th left), Mr Eddie Leung, Principal Government Engineer/Railway Development of the Highways Department (4th right), Mr Mok Mong-chan, Assistant District Officer (Islands) (3rd right), and Ms Wong Chau-ping, Chairlady of the Tung Chung Rural Committee (3rd left), along with community representatives to witness the new milestone of the west section works under the Tung Chung Line Extension project.

The tunnel boring machine was officially named “Xihe.” “Xihe” is the goddess of the sun in Chinese mythology, symbolising guidance and light, bestowing blessings that the tunnel construction works will be completed smoothly under the guidance of “Xihe”, enhancing transport connectivity of the Tung Chung community.
