Tung Chung Line Extension Major Track Diversion Works
The Second Turnout Installation
Train Service between Tung Chung and Sunny Bay to end earlier in the evening of 19 April

• Leafets: Chinese/English | Urdu | Punjabi

The Tung Chung Line Extension project is taking forward the major track diversion works, including the installation of a total of four turnouts, connecting the existing Tung Chung Line tracks to the future Tung Chung East Station in phases. The second critical turnout installation will take place late at night on 19 April (Saturday) this year on the Hong Kong-bound track east of Tung Chung East Station.

Train Service Adjustment on Tung Chung Line:
Facilitating the turnout installation, Tung Chung Line train service between Tung Chung and Sunny Bay stations will end about two hours earlier than usual in the evening of 19 April. The schedule for the last train is as follows:

Subsequently, normal service between Hong Kong and Sunny Bay stations will be maintained until the usual end-of-service time. The Airport Express service will not be affected.
Transport arrangements are as follows:

1. Free shuttle buses will operate between Tung Chung and Sunny Bay stations during the service adjustment.

Route Boarding/Drop-off Location Frequency
Tung Chung Station to Sunny Bay Station Tung Chung Station Exit A
Parking Area
Around 3-9 Minutes
Sunny Bay Station to Tung Chung Station Sunny Bay Station Exit A
Sunny Bay Public Transport Interchange

2. Embark on your journey earlier! Allow more time for commuting.
        1) Since the shuttle bus journey takes about 20-30 minutes, which is longer than the train ride, we recommend passengers allocate extra time for their travel
        2) Passengers intending to catch the last train of any railway line please pay particular attention!
(To catch the connecting train to Hong Kong station at Sunny Bay station, you must board the shuttle bus departing from Tung Chung before 00:18.)

3. Use MTR Mobile app to plan your journey
        1) Passengers can use MTR Mobile to plan their journeys and get the latest Tung Chung Line service information!

Also, prominent posters and signages will be displayed along the Tung Chung Line and at other major MTR stations, and information about service adjustments will be disseminated through station and in-train announcements, news media, and MTR social media. Notices will be displayed at the stations that night to inform passengers about the arrangements, with additional staff deployed to assist passengers with the shuttle bus service.

Tung Chung Line Extension Major Track Diversion Works

Under the Tung Chung Line Extension project, a new Tung Chung East Station# will be constructed between the existing Sunny Bay and Tung Chung stations. To connect to the future new station, the Tung Chung Line mainline tracks need to be diverted to the north with the construction of an approximately 1.2-kilometre new railway section.

The major track diversion works mainly include:
• Construction of a new railway section
• Installation of overhead lines
• Modification of the existing signaling system
• Phased installation of four turnouts on both the Tung Chung- and Hong Kong-bound tracks

The turnout installation is particularly critical in the track diversion works. Turnouts are important track facilities that allow trains to enter the new railway section. This works needs to be carried out on the operating Tung Chung Line tracks, and includes the following procedures that must be carried out uninterrupted:
• Installation of track components
• Track position adjustment and connection
• Installation of a point machine
• Testing of the signaling system and the various tests before train service resumption

After multiple reviews and careful planning by the project team, it was confirmed that several consecutive hours are necessary for the works to be carried out safely and smoothly. As the “Golden Two Hours” window is insufficient, it is inevitable that non-traffic hours will need to be slightly extended, with a minor service adjustment to be made on the Tung Chung Line service.

The first critical turnout installation was successfully completed in the late night of 26 October 2024, while the second installation is scheduled for 19 April 2025. According to the current plan, the remaining turnouts will be installed between 2026 and 2027. The project team will carefully plan the works, and announce the details in due course.
